Get the Inside Scoop – Summer of 2023
Hi Friends! Come to Middletown, Maryland to Get the Inside Scoop on Middletown’s own Ice Cream trail! We’ve created our own passport to inspire you to become an ice cream expert.
Middletown, Maryland seems to have this slight obsession with ice cream. It seems to have started years, or generations ago. This does make sense, with the Middletown Valley being known for its diary farming industry, but in a town that is relatively small, we do have a fair number of places that set us apart from other like-sized towns.
CF Main purchased the property at 14 West Main Street and created an actual ice cream factory here, circa 1922. Main’s Ice Cream was a regional hotspot! One local resident who lived across the street from the factory recalls people standing in a line that stretched almost an entire block as a weekend occurrence. The factory closed in 1969 and after a period of time, entrepreneurs purchased the property and created another Middletown “hot spot,” The Main Cup, a regionally popular restaurant serving fresh American fare. In an ode to the history of the location, the neon sign for Main’s Ice Cream was preserved, still brightening our evenings with its soft glow.
Our ice cream passport takes you to the following Dessert Destinations:
To compete with the frenzy of Main’s Ice Cream, Lee DeLauter & Sons opened their retail establishment within steps of the Main’s Ice Cream factory and secured the first license to sell Hersey’s Ice Cream – in the country! Talk about fun confectionary trivia! Locally known as LDS, this is still a favorite spot to get an ice cream treat.
If you’re looking for something a tad more exotic – Abbraccio Gelato fits that need. Again, within walking distance, Abbraccio Gelato brings us the flavors of Italy, cold, creamy, and decadent in its own way, these gelatos will have you involuntarily humming That’s Amoire!.
And do you remember the resident who lived across from the Main’s Ice Cream factory? Well, that home is none other than More Ice Cream! Situated inside this home featuring a large, wrap-around front porch that provides the perfect way to enjoy ice cream. Inside the décor is full of Middletown High School sports memories. Even if you are not from here, it’s fun to look at some of the uniforms we either loved, or suffered in our high school sporting days, all while taking bit after bit of ice cream.
The fourth dessert destination is the nearby farm, South Mountain Creamery, located just a few short miles outside of downtown. Not only is this ice cream farm-fresh, but plan out your visit by going to their website and sign up for the special experience of feeding a baby cow with a large, warm bottle of milk. Looking into those calf eyes that melt your heart just makes that ice cream taste so much sweeter!
We do think after sampling these dessert destinations, you too, will become an Ice Cream expert! Be sure to complete your Ice Cream Passport game card and drop it off to Town Hall at 31 West Main Street by Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
We’ll draw ten winners who will receive a Get the Inside Scoop, Middletown, Maryland Ice Cream T-shirt.
